Duke Student Wellness Center

Programs and Workshops

Our staff and the students we work with can present workshops for students on a variety of health topics, and we can adapt any of our existing workshops to meet the needs of your group.  Common topics that students request programs on are alcohol abuse prevention, sexual health, and stress management.

In order to host a successful workshop, be sure to decide on a topic that's of interest to everyone and identify a program date that's at least two weeks out - to allow yourself time to coordinate and promote the program and for your presenters to prepare the presentation.  Also, be sure to get the word out!  We need a minimum of ten people to get the conversation going and to ensure all workshops are interactive.

To schedule a workshop for your group, email Duke Student Wellness Center, call 919-681-8421, or fill out the online program request form at least two weeks in advance.

Alcohol EDU

AlcoholEdu® is an online alcohol prevention program for college students that provides detailed information about alcohol and its effects on the body and mind. The goals of the course are to help students make well-informed decisions about alcohol and to provide students with skills to deal with campus alcohol use amongst their peers. This program is used on over 500 campuses nationwide. AlcoholEdu® for College will empower you to make well-informed safe decisions about alcohol for a successful college career.

e-CHUG

E-Chug is an interactive web survey that allows Duke students to enter information about their drinking patterns and receive feedback about their use of alcohol. The assessment takes about 6-7 minutes to complete, is self-guided, and requires no face-to-face contact time with a counselor or administrator.

What does e-Chug do?

When you access e-Chug, you are prompted to enter information about yourself. In addition to demographic information, it will ask you to enter information about your drinking habits, family history, and to complete the World Health Organization’s AUDIT.

After all information has been entered, you submit the form. The information you entered is then validated and processed. E-Chug calculates a number of variables and compares your responses to national and local college norms. Then, your personalized feedback is displayed in an easy-to-read format.

What do I need to use e-Chug?

  1. A computer
  2. Internet access
  3. A JavaScript enabled internet browser
  4. About 6-7 minutes
  5. A printer (to print the feedback)

Group Discussion Sessions

The Duke Student Wellness Center works with student organizations or athletic teams to define practices, policies and procedures to keep their members safe and healthy.  We can work with the whole group or a smaller sub-set, like your executive board or team leaders, to identify specific things that can improve the wellness of your whole group.

Small group discussions can help your group:

  • learn more about wellness resources available on campus
  • discuss how your group's culture affects everyone within the group
  • discuss ways that your group can be involved with community health issues
  • address the disruptive behaviors of specific group members
  • get advice on how to help a friend dealing with a substance use problem or other health issue
