Memorial service planned for student killed in bike accident

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

A student-organized memorial service for Claire Crowley will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Goodson Chapel, located in the Divinity School, adjacent to Duke Chapel.  All are welcome.

A sophomore political science major in Trinity College, Crowley was killed Saturday, Dec. 23, after being struck by a vehicle while bike riding near her home in Clemmons, N.C.

One of Crowley's professors, biologist Sherryl Broverman, remembered her as a student who became deeply interested this fall in the issue of gender inequality in Kenya after taking Broverman’s class on AIDS and emerging diseases. Crowley was among 12 students in a research service-learning section that focused on a project called the Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research (WISER), which is creating a boarding school for girls in Kenya.  She also was involved with Rival magazine ane was vice president of Duke’s women’s ultimate team, called Chakra.

Memorial organizer Rosanne Jones said in an email, "We really want to honor and celebrate her life and time that she spent here on campus. This is not just a service for her close friends, but for anyone who knew Claire in any form."

Jones said that students will speak in remembrance of Crowley throughout the service, which will conclude with a slideshow and musical tribute.  For those who wish to speak at the service, please email Rosanne.Jones@duke.edu by Friday Jan. 26.

A simple reception will be held immediately following the service in a location to be announced.
