Letter from Larry Moneta to Duke students

VP encourages extra vigilance in light of recent threats

Friday, April 20, 2007

The following communication was distributed to all Duke students from Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta on Friday, April 20:

Dear Duke Student:

This is a day for hope and for healing.  Across the globe, regardless of difference or divide, individuals and communities will demonstrate their solidarity and support of Virginia Tech by donning maroon and orange in honor of Hokie Hope Day.  This symbolic gesture will serve to illustrate amazing resolve in the face of unprecedented adversity. Today and onward, we will remember the families and friends of the 32 victims in Monday's shooting and continue to keep in our thoughts those 28 others wounded in the incident who are on the path to recovery. This day, we are reminded, goodness will prevail.

Inevitably, following such tragedies, one hears of isolated threats to do additional harm in an attempt to break that community spirit of resolve.  Institutions across the nation and world, including Duke, begin hearing murmurs of violent acts to follow at home on one's own campus. While institutions must take such threats seriously and do their best to explore their veracity, this grim reality underscores our need to be extra vigilant in all that we do.  We must remain increasingly aware of our immediate surroundings, be on the lookout for suspicious or unusual activity and report to authorities anything that presents itself as a potential threat to our community.

I am emboldened by the outpouring of support for the Virginia Tech family by the Duke University community.  We will continue to extend support to any students at Duke who indicate a need.  Please note the important contact numbers below.  Be safe and be well.

Larry Moneta
Vice President for Student Affairs
