Theft-prevention tips

Showing off your great holiday gifts to your friends is part of the fun of getting cool new stuff. Remember, when you’re showing off that gift, someone else might be looking for an opportunity to take it from you.
Some important things to keep in mind:
Duke is a safe place to be, but whether on campus or off, students should always take precaution in order to protect themselves and their property.

Some important things to keep in mind:
- Don’t leave your items unattended, not even for a moment. Burglars look for easy targets such as unattended laptops, gaming devices, cell phones, mp3 players, backpacks or purses, unlocked bikes and other valuables. Whether in the library, the gym, or having lunch, don’t leave your things unattended.
- Lock your doors. Burglars typically enter through unlocked doors. Most thieves give up if they can’t enter a home quickly. Forced entry is rare in residential thefts.
- Store your valuables out of sight. A majority of auto thefts occur when valuable items like navigation devices or cell phones are left in plain sight. Most burglars will ignore vehicles without valuables in view. Hide valuables in the glove compartment, under the seat, in the trunk, or take them with you.
- Report all suspicious activities or persons immediately. Call campus police at 919-684-2444 or in an emergency, dial 911.
