Coming Home

Artist and educator Beverly McIver will speak about her life and work at the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture on Wednesday, September 17, from 7-9 p.m. She is in town to jury the 54th Annual Juried Art Show of new works, sponsored by the Durham Art Guild and Duke University.

McIver is known for her autobiographical “self” portraits exploring race and stereotype through her own journey of self-discovery. Spanning two decades, her paintings are variously described as “raw,” “emotional,” and “powerful.”

Her works appear in galleries and museums across the country, including collections at Duke University, The Baltimore Museum of Arts, and the Scottstdale Museum of Contemporary Art. She has received honors from the John S. Guggenheim Fellowship, the Radcliffe Fellowship from Harvard University, and the Artist of the Year Award from the Scottsdale, AZ, Cultural Council.

Born in Greensboro, NC, McIver received her undergraduate education from North Carolina Central University, where she now teaches.
