Announcing the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

Hello, Friends of the LGBT Center.

I am writing to share the exciting news that as of August 1, 2013 we are changing our name to the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity!

You may ask why the name change?  Over the past seven years our constituents’ identities have expanded to include persons who identify as intersex, ally, pansexual, straight, asexual, queer, demisexual, genderqueer, and questioning among other identities. Thus, we chose a name that is more inclusive and accurately reflects the diverse identities of the students, staff, faculty, and alums who call our center home.
Our mission remains the same:

The Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity provides education, advocacy, support, mentoring, academic engagement, and space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersex, pansexual, questioning, queer and allied students, staff, and faculty at Duke. The Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity also serves and supports Duke alumni/ae and the greater LGBTQ community.

Through its services, the Center encourages critical thinking about the intellectual, cultural, and political ramifications of sexual and gender diversity at Duke and beyond. We seek to challenge bias and intolerance in order to promote affirmation and support a more inclusive campus climate.

Our new e-mail address is: csgd@studentaffairs.duke.edu.  The Facebook page is:https://www.facebook.com/DukeCSGD and Twitter will be: twitter.com/DukeCSGD. The website will be changed soon so stay tuned for that info.

We will be celebrating our new name together with our new center space at the beginning of the fall semester.  We hope you will join us.  Details coming soon!

My best,

Dr. Janie Long
Director, Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity
