An 8 Question Interview About Advice and Diversity and Inclusion at Voalte/Hillrom

I recently had a conversation with Taryn, a hiring manager at Voalte (acquired by Hillrom). Check out what she had to say about exploring careers and the company culture at Hillrom, as well as their Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, and advice to students. Question: So tell me about Hillrom?
Hillrom Rep:
Hillrom is a leading provider of medical technologies for the health care industry including hospital beds, patient lifts, and non-invasive therapeutic products.

Question: How did you get your start at Hillrom?
I was recruited into Voalte (recently acquired by Hillrom) right after I graduated college and attended their sales development program, that I am now managing.

Question: The Sales Development Program sounds intriguing, tell me more.
Hillrom Rep:
This program (also known as the New Business Generation Representative position) is a great opportunity for students who are interested in Sales, Marketing, Healthcare, or Technology. Healthcare has a lot of trends. Some current ones include becoming more transparent on costs to consumers, consumerism as a whole, value-based care, and helping to address disparities among the patient population.

Question: So this is a great opportunity that allows students to be at the forefront of the evolving trends in healthcare, that's great. What are some of the majors that you recruit for the Sales Development Program/New Business Generation Representative position?
Hillrom Rep:
We often recruit Mathematics and Business Administration majors/minors. But all majors are encouraged to apply.

Question: You sound really excited about your job. How would you describe your company culture and benefits of working there?
Hillrom Rep:
There is a great work-life balance within Hillrom. The company has flexible PTO (paid time off), so you are able to take the time you need to recuperate and have downtime for yourself. Besides HR perks, my personal favorite perk is the unlimited supply of coffee in our large cafe!

Question: That is very rewarding! So what’s an interesting fact about Hillrom?
Hillrom Rep:
One interesting fact is our company recently released a hospital bed that allows continuous monitoring of a patient's heart rate and respiratory rate right from the bed! This allows caregivers to catch a patient's deterioration early and improve outcomes for the patient.

Question: What are some of the initiatives and Diversity/Inclusion and Equity resources at Hillrom?
Hillrom Rep:
We have several amazing resource groups at Hillrom including:

Each of these offers a variety of programming, communications and other opportunities for each employee to grow and contribute to Hillrom’s culture of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

Question: As we wrap up our conversation, what is one piece of advice you’d offer to Duke students?
Be yourself and let your personality shine! Also - make sure to properly prepare your resume for the position you are applying for. Even a simple objective statement tailored to the position you are interested in goes a long way. Make your resume stand out or possibly use a unique format (and use a professional headshot of yourself with your LinkedIn profile).
