This week, we travel to Latvia in northeastern Europe, the middle of the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). Latvia borders the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga, with Estonia to the north, Russia to the East, Belarus to the southeast, and Lithuania to the south. Latvia also has one of the world’s oldest flags (only surpassed by Denmark)! Its current flag has been in use since 1280.

For this week’s flag of the week, we’re taking you to the heart of Africa: Zambia. This landlocked nation is bordered by eight countries, of which include the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Malawi to the east, Zimbabwe to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city of Zambia is Lusaka, which is home to almost 3 million inhabitants. As of 2020, approximately 17.4 million people live in Zambia.

This week, we travel to Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. It is one of the world’s 45 landlocked nations, but it also has Issyk-Kul, a beautiful high-altitude lake that is 113 miles long. Mountains cover about 80% of the country, leading some to describe it as the “Switzerland of Central Asia”.

Reminiscing about the end of summer? Join us this week for a trip to Samoa! This island nation is located in Oceania in the South Pacific, and it consists of two main islands, Savai’i and Upolu. Apia is the capital city, which is located on Upolu. Samoa is neighbored by several islands, including American Samoa, Tokelau, Niue, Tonda, and Fiji. However, the International Date Line places Samoa 24 hours ahead of its closest neighbor, American Samoa.

Michelle Zhang

Michelle Zhang is a junior at Duke studying Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, with a minor in French! Her hometown is in Iquique, Chile, where she was born and raised. At Duke, she is Co-Director of HackDuke and Marketing Co-Chair at Catalyst. In her free time, Michelle is a fan of puzzles and Rubik’s cubes, and singing along to foreign music.
