Our flag of the week at the International House is the Nepalese flag. Nepal is a landlocked country located in South Asia. Lying along the slopes of the Himalayan mountain ranges, 75% of Nepal is covered by mountains. The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu.

This week, we are highlighting the West African country of Nigeria. Nigeria is often called the “Giant of Africa” due to its large population and economy. Home to over 200 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the 7th most populous country in the world. With $1 trillion in purchasing power parity, Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and the world’s 20th largest economy.

The island of Mauritius, part of the Mascarene Islands, is just east of Madagascar, southeast of Seychelles, and northeast of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The areas of the country id 790 square miles, 1200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa.

Mauritius was a British colony from 1810 till 1968 when it achieved independence, it was also previously colonized by the Dutch and French. The largest city of the island and also the capital is Port Louis.

Chile is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes.

Lebanon is located in the rocky area of West Asia known as the Levant, surrounded by Syria and Israel. The country is divided in 4 main geographical regions with the capital city located in Beirut. The other famous cities are Tripoli in the north and Tyre in the south. The name Lebanon means “white” in Phoenician, referring to the snowy mountains.
