GREEK CONVOCATION SPEECH

Thank you for that introduction. I’m honored to be here tonight. I’ve been to the chapel before. I even got married in this chapel many years ago. 

But I’ve never been at this podium.

I teach classes, run programs and give speeches at Duke all the time, but I’ve never had a chance to speak to so many students at once and certainly not in the chapel. 

So this is a new experience for me. I mean it when I say I’m honored to be here tonight with all of you. 

I hope to honor you back by sharing with a few stories and lessons learned from my life.  I hope to give you something to think about, something to talk about with your friends and perhaps something that will influence your life here at Duke and life beyond Duke.

This past week the Duke Iota Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was named chapter of the year for their region at their annual conference in Wilmington, North Carolina.  The conference brought together over 300 current and potential new members from 50 regional undergraduate and alumni chapters to celebrate and recognize of the achievements of their members over the past

Dear Student:

Each semester brings exciting opportunities for involvement and leadership in campus and community organizations, such as fraternities, sororities, selective living groups, and non-residential groups. For some organizations, a new member period—sometimes referred to as pledging—occurs as new members join the group.

Todd Adams, senior associate dean in the Dean of Students office, will be leaving Duke this January to become assistant vice president and dean of students for Student Affairs at Northwestern University.

Dear Students,

We are excited about the upcoming renovations to the Bryan Center. While the work is being done, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will be moving to 2022 Campus Drive (formerly the International House) on Monday, November 19th and officially be open for business on Tuesday, November 20th.

In order to prepare for the move the Office will be closed on Friday, November 16th.

We look forward to many visitors in our temporary location and most importantly look forward to moving in to our new home on the lower level of the Bryan Center next to CMA.
