Getting Started With CAPS

Looking to initiate services with CAPS?

If you would like to begin services at CAPS, please call our front desk at (919)-660-1000 between the hours of 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday. A member of our front desk staff will collect your contact information and share it with a CAPS counselor who will call you for a phone or telemental health visit.

In the event that a member of the front desk staff is not available to take your call immediately, you will be instructed to leave a voicemail message including your name and contact information.  You will be contacted by a member of the front desk staff as soon as they become available.

Your initial contact with a counselor will take place in the form of an Access phone call. These calls are assigned to counselors on a first-come, first-served basis. Please plan for 15-30 minutes for your initial Access screening call.

Here is what you can expect during an Access Consultation:

  1. For this initial visit, you will speak with a counselor for about 15 to 30 minutes. The counselor will assess any concerns about your safety, evaluate if your needs can be met within CAPS’ brief treatment model, and determine where services are most appropriately provided; and

  1. You will end the call with recommendations about next steps in your care, which may be through CAPS, another campus resource, a provider in the Durham community or, if you are living outside of Durham, in your home community. If services will be through CAPS, you will schedule future appointments with an assigned provider or provider team. Follow up visits at CAPS generally last 45-50 minutes for Individual/Couples appointments and 90 minutes for Groups.

  1. You may be asked to complete some forms and questionnaires before a visit or before a visit is scheduled. These forms typically require 15-20 minutes to complete and may add to the time you spend on a given visit.

Local counselors are available to Marine Lab enrolled students through the Duke CAPS program. To utilize this service, please contact Referral Coordinator Lia Gilmore, LCSW,  Duke CAPS at 919-660-1012 or liadainn.gilmore@duke.edu

Please contact Katie Wood @ 252-504-7586 if you have questions or concerns about the providers or the process. Please also feel free to connect with your program coordinators if you prefer.
