Welcome to the CSGD

We strive to achieve an inclusive campus.

Home Belonging Identity, Culture and Religion Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

Our goal is to create an inclusive climate for students, staff, faculty, and alumnx with marginalized sexual orientations, romantic orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions through education, advocacy, support, mentoring, academic engagement, and providing space.

Connect. Learn. Grow.

The CSGD is a community of resources, support and inspiration.

No Pride for Some

We recognize the ways that racism and whiteness is embedded within the LGBTQIA+ communities. We are committed to doing our work with intersectional social justice lens that names and works to disrupt impacts of racism and white supremacy on Black and Brown members of our communities.

Programs and Events for Everyone

The Duke LGBTQ community is bold, welcoming and inclusive. CSGD invites you to explore—and get involved—in our wide range of programs and events.

Each Friday during the semester, the CSGD hosts Kickback Friday from 4-6pm. Every Kickback Friday boasts a different themed activity. We'd encourage you to join our newsletter or follow our social media to learn more about upcoming Kickback Fridays.

The Fall Welcome Reception is an event offered at the beginning of the calendar year to welcome new and returning students to campus. Students are invited to meet the staff and students who work in the Center, learn about the programs and resources the CSGD provides, and build community with peers.

Pride: Durham, NC is planned by the LGBTQ Center of Durham and celebrated annually in September. The CSGD supports the LGBTQ Center of Durham and marches in the annual Pride parade.

For information regarding Pride: Durham, NC we invite you to visit http://pridedurhamnc.org

National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for the LGBTQIA+ community.  It is observed on October 11 every year by members of the LGBTQIA+ communities and those who stand in solidarity with them. National Coming Out Day is on the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights and the first visit of the AIDS Memorial Quilt to Washington DC.

Each year, the CSGD collaborates with other centers across campus to celebrate Coming Out Day and LGBTQIA+ History Month at Duke. Please join us for the celebration, including music, games, food, and free t-shirts. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Coming Out Day at Duke is celebrated in conjunction with LGBTQIA+ History Month which is observed in October.

LGBTQIA+ History Month was first celebrated in 1994 and was founded by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher. LGBTQIA+ History Month "provides role models, builds community and makes the civil rights statement about our extraordinary national and international contributions." (https://lgbthistorymonth.com/background)

Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed on November 20 to remember those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.  The CSGD collaborates with the LGBTQ Center of Durham to recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance with a service and dinner.

The Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity  works to raise awareness about the hate crimes and violence gender non-conforming individuals face on a daily basis with campaigns around campus. We offer presentations of Trans 101 to groups throughout the year. Please see our Training & Resources page for more information on these trainings.

Lavender Graduation is a ceremony that congratulates and celebrates the achievements of graduating LGBTQIA+ and ally undergraduates and graduate/professional students. In addition to celebrating our graduates, the CSGD awards a group and a faculty/staff member who has positively impacted the experiences of LGBTQIA+ students, staff and faculty and are working towards a more inclusive campus. The ceremony is followed by dinner.

The CSGD along with Student Engagement and the Mary Lou Williams Center is excited to collaborate on the Queer and Trans Leadership Series. This program is designed to engage students in a developmental and reflective learning experience where students will be able to foster their leadership growth through the lens of their Queer and Trans identities in conjunction with their other social identities. Throughout the course of this program students will meet and connect with influential leaders who are engaged in important work throughout a variety of settings (activism and advocacy, nonprofit, education, state government, etc.)

These dialogues will enable students to explore their personal character and values, their communities, and be better prepared themselves to create meaningful and positive change as we work to create a more inclusive and socially just world.

The Queer and Trans Leadership Series is made possible through the generous support of the Erik K. Ludwig Fund. The Fund was established in 2018 to support the work of the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity through the QLTS and other programs that inspire others to be involved in their communities and make a difference.

The CSGD hosts numerous other events throughout the academic year. Learn about upcoming CSGD events by finding us on Duke Groups, joining our mailing list, and following us on social media!
