Over the ten years I've been at Duke, lgbtq students have (slowly, at first) begun to write about their experiences, and from their particular point-of-view. And I'd like to continue providing - in my classes - a safe space for students to explore themselves through their writing.

Ally. As a campus minister representing the United Church of Christ I'm proud that our denomination has welcomed LGBT+ people for many years. For just one example, in 1972 we ordained the first openly gay minister to be so recognized by any mainline denomination, long before other churches. I was a member before, while I was working at Duke and continued to be a member after I retired from Duke in 2000. In 2005 I was specially invited by the Task Force to be a part of a committee that would propose the introduction of language in the Duke Anti-discrimination Policy in order to protect gender identity and presentation. We finished this task in the Spring of 2006, but it had to wait until February of 2007 to be approved by the Board Of Trustees, which only approved the gender Identity part.

I develop programming and provide student support at the Center for Muslim Life. I am connected to queer community and activism in Durham, and would love to introduce queer students, especially queer Muslim students, to local and national organizations and networks that center their experiences.

I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and committed to others who want to live, love, and grow to our highest potential in a world free of oppression, fear, and violence.

As a first-generation college student from rural North Carolina, I understand the challenges LGBTQIA+ people face growing up in a somewhat conservative household and family. Knowing this, some of my areas of knowledge surrounding these topics include identity development, navigating the unique challenge of being both first-gen andLGBTQIA+, coming  out to conservative and/or religious folx, and building your circle within the queer community. I understand the privilege I hold as a white bisexual cisgender man, but want to bring my authentic self to you and support you in whatever space you currently find yourself in.
