John Blackshear was named dean of students in Student Affairs in June, 2020. He will continue to hold the post of associate vice provost of undergraduate education. In that role, he helps coordinate shared priorities between Student Affairs, the university’s academic deans and the Office of Undergraduate Education

Blackshear previously was dean of academic affairs for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, as well as senior associate dean of academic planning in Trinity College. Since 2001, he has served a wide range of essential support roles for students at Duke, including academic dean, supervising Duke’s low-income and first-generation scholarship and success programs, serving as clinical director of the Academic Resource Center, and working with Duke’s Office of Student Returns and Student Disabilities Access Office. He was Duke’s student ombudsperson from 2007-2015. Backshear also previously worked in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) from 2001-2007.

A clinical psychologist by training, Blackshear holds his doctorate in clinical psychology from Georgia State University, and a masters in community/clinical psychology as well as a B.S. in psychology from Florida A&M University. Blackshear has served as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke since 2009, and will continue teaching.

Blackshear also serves as the Faculty-In-Residence (FIR) in Trinity Residence Hall. The Blackshear family--including wife Kimberly Blackshear, Director of the Duke University's Time Away Office, and their six children--have opened their home to first-year students in Trinity and Giles residence halls since 2016.

A Chesapeake, Virginia native, Clay serves as the Associate Dean of Students at Duke University.  He graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, a B.S. in Business Management, and a M.A. Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. He most recently earned his Masters of Business Administration from North Carolina Central University. Clay directs all parent and family programs, oversees the University on-call management and response team as well as off-campus student response, and co-convenes the Council on Graduate and Professional Student Affairs. Additionally, he works with New Student Communications, and as the Division liaison to various constituencies. In his free time, Clay can be found training for endurance sports.

Jordan Hale is a graduate of the University of Florida (B.A. History and Economics) and The University of Massachusetts- Amherst (M. ed. Higher Education). A native Floridian and avid reader, Jordan and the New Student Orientation team oversee the on-boarding process for incoming first-year and transfer students. This includes summer transition, new student communication, pre-orientation programs and orientation week.

Jeanna McCullers is the Senior Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Office of Student Conduct.  Prior to entering into this role, Jeanna worked as an Associate Dean of Students focusing on Title IX adjudication and Bias incident management.  Jeanna began her career as a Staff Attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina and enjoys grassroots policy work.  When Jeanna is not focusing on Duke, she enjoys binging the Great British Baking Show and trying her best at English and French pastries.

Originally from Virginia, Amy came to the Dean of Students Office after working in the Duke University Medical Center since 2000. Amy received her undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She obtained clinical licensure in social work in 2005. In her spare time, Amy enjoys spending time with her husband and sons and doing just about anything outside (in the warmer months!).

Tom joined the Duke family in 2008. He obtained his BS in Mental Health from the Franciscan University in Ohio and his Masters in Counseling with a focus in Child Welfare from St. Joseph College in Connecticut. Prior to working in Higher Education Tom worked with families of abused and neglected children for over 15 years primarily as an investigator. A native New Yorker he loves the outdoors whether it is being at the beach, gardening and/or spending time with his four children.

Vaughn comes to Duke from the Ohio State University (OSU), where he served in both Student Health Services and the Department of Family Medicine since 2007. In addition to providing primary health care to undergraduate and graduate students, he designed innovative health promotion activities that integrated health services into the life of the university community; enhanced organizational effectiveness for the health center; and developed a Narrative Medicine curriculum across multiple areas of OSU.

As the Associate Director of Assessment, Kate leads and oversees all assessment activities in the health and wellness units in the Dean of Students office, including CAPS, Student Health, DuWell and DukeReach. She collects, analyzes, interprets and reports assessment data to help inform strategic planning and decision-making processes at the unit and departmental level. Kate earned her B.A. in English from Tianjin Foreign Studies University in Tianjin, China and her M.A.Ed. in Education Leadership and Policy Analysis from Virginia Tech, and her Ph.D. in Educational Research and Policy Analysis from North Carolina State University. In her spare time, Kate enjoys running and ice skating with her family.
