Open Expression

As promulgated in its policy on Pickets, Protests, and Demonstrations, Duke University “respects the right of all members of the academic community to explore and to discuss questions which interest them, to express opinions publicly and privately, and to join together to demonstrate their concern by orderly means” (The Duke Community Standard in Practice: A Guide for Undergraduates 2017-2018, p. 35).

The Division of Student Affairs has established a team of faculty and staff volunteers that can attend events to help sustain an environment conducive to the free and orderly exchange of ideas. Known as the B-Team, these individuals intersperse within the attendees of an event to help monitor and protect the rights of those present to express their opinions in non-disruptive ways. Additionally, the team will help ensure that the surrounding community is not adversely impacted by disturbance or interference.

If you would like to request members of our “B-Team” to support open and orderly expression at an upcoming event or program, please complete this form  at least one week in advance.

If you have any questions please contact the Dean of Students office at: or call 919-684-3737.
