Julie Anne Levey
Julie Anne Levey graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Area Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in History as part of the Class of 1993 from Duke University. During her time at Duke, Julie participated in Focus and was on the Dean's List. She was active in student life including serving as a Tour Guide through the Office of Admissions, worked on project Head Start, fund raised for The Annual Fund, and worked in the Office of the Public Defender in Durham. After graduation, Julie was employed by Arthur Andersen & Company in their Washington, DC office for two years prior to her enrollment at NYU School of Law. In 1996, Julie passed away suddenly from a massive aneurysm.



The experiences, education and lasting relationships that Julie realized during her four years at Duke were a significant part of her life and helped her establish and reinforce the foundation upon which she built her life and moved forward.



The Levey family--Lewis, Leslee, Jon, Caryn, Stephen, and Stephanie--honors Julie with the Julie Anne Levey Memorial Award Program.

Julie Anne Levey Memorial Award

The Julie Anne Levey Memorial Award was established in 1997. The primary mission of the program is to sponsor an event to entertain, educate, stimulate thought and discussion, and generally enhance the experience of first-year students at Duke University. The Julie Anne Levey Memorial Award is presented to an emerging leader in the first year class who has demonstrated a dedication to the first-year residential experience and the Duke community through leadership in co-curricular activities and who demonstrated initiative, creativity, and a clear commitment to making a difference in the lives of his/her peers.

2017-2018 Julie Anne Levey Memorial Leadership Award Nominations All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to submit a nomination for a first year student leader.  The recipient will be honored with a commemorative gift and a one-time $4,000.00. scholarship to be awarded in 2017-2018. Nominations should outline specific reasons how the student nominated is a deserving recipient.  Nominees will be notified and asked to submit a personal statement outlining their leadership, initiative, and commitment to service.

Nomination emails or questions about the award can be sent to LB Bergene. The nomination deadline is noon on March 20, 2017.

Jonelle Grant (Rembert, SC) Jonelle was active in the Bassett House Council and participated actively in the Duke University Union, Black Student Alliance, and is on the Presidential Council for Black Affairs. She was also involved in many community service activities and Project Build.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2001
Mark Pike (Virginia Beach, VA). Mark was president of his House Council and served as Chair for the Last Day of Classes concert as part of Campus Council.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2002)
Natalie Centeno (Miami, FL). Natalie is a Cultural Anthropology and English double major with a certificate in Latin American Studies. She was a member of Project Wild and was active in Duke Student Government Committee for Facilities and Athletics Affairs. She was also the employee relations coordinator for the Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee.

Laura Dilly (Inverness, IL). Laura is in Trinity College and was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma. She made the Dean's List with Distinction during her freshman year.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2004)
Karthik Balasubramanian (Cincinatti, Ohio). Karthik is a double major in electrical engineering and economics with a minor in political science. He is also working on a certificate in markets and management studies. He is an Angier B. Duke Scholar.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2005)
Christopher Hopper (Cary, NC). Chris was the president of the East Campus Council. He is also a Robertson Scholar and is active on many university committees.



Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2006)
Samson Mesele (Charlotte, NC). Samson was a part of Engineers Without Borders , DSG, BSA, as well as a member of the Blackwell House Council.  He is a Robertson Scholar and participates actively in the Durham community including tutoring, teaching classes, and serving through his faith community.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2007)

Catalina Blanco (Pembroke Pines, Fl). Originally from the nation of  Columbia, Catalina served as the vice president for the Brown House Council, the treasurer for East Campus Council, and a class representative to Campus Council.  She was active in her house community and always the first to volunteer to help others with their projects. In 2007, she has broadened her responsibilities to include serving as treasurer for the Duke University Union.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2008)
Alex Reese (Grayslake, Il). During his first year, Alex served as the vice president for the Randolph House Council and first year class representative to Campus Council. Alex spearheaded the Morehead Giving Project and was chosen to participate in the Leadership Roundtables through OSAF in addition to being seleected for the First Year Internship Program during which he initiated the Duke Innovative Design Agency. Alex is known for his willingness to give 100% to any project and for being a caring listener and good friend to his classmates. Alex plans to major in Public Policy and in 2008 will lead the newly developed Umbuntu group, which he co-founded with some of his classmates, on West Campus.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2009)
Betsy Klein (Charlotte, NC). During her first year at Duke, Betsy served as the Class President in her role as President of East Campus Council. She was the house council vice-president in Blackwell Hall and also was active in ICC. Betsy was selected as a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity and the Junior Panhellenic Council. Betsy was very active in planning activities for the first year class as part of East Campus Council and was known for being a caring leader and someone who people looked to for advice. Betsy plans to major in Public Policy and is looking forward to her internships this summer.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2010)
Rob VanDusen (Boulder, CO) served as the vice president on Gilbert-Addoms House Council and treasurer of East Campus Council. He is active in the Ski Team and majoring in Economics. Rob hopes to work in health care in a role that combines medicine and management.

Dan Stefanus 
(St. Louis, MO) was vice president on Randolph House Council and served on East Campus Council. He is an Economics Major and serves in Navy ROTC.  Dan was nominated for the care and compassion he shows his classmates.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2012)
Lucas Metropulos (Boca Raton, FL) was vice president on Pegram House Council and served on East Campus Council.  Lucas founded his own non-profit organization Fishing for Families in Need and rallied his classmates to get involved in service.

Christine Schindler (Fairfax, VA) served on Duke Student Government, Duke Partners for Service, and many other organizations.  She was nominated by her classmates for her dedication to her involvement and for her positive outlook.

John "Jay" Sullivan (Fairfield, CT)  Jay has been involved in Duke Student Government, Tour Guiding, House Council, the Chronicle, and Duke Chorale.  Jay serves as an RA and was instrumental in starting the "You Don't Say" Campaign on campus.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2014)

Hala Daou (clearwater, FL) has been involved in house government, East Campus Council, and numerous service organizations. She plans to major in Biology and eventually attend medical school.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Awards (2015)

Luke Duchemin (Hockessin, DE) - class president for East Campus Council, sits on several campus committees such as the Council for Collaborative Action, America Reads and America Counts, Project Build, facilitator for ProjectDive program, RA on East Campus.  Hopes to become an English teacher.

Aishu Ramamurthi (Aurora, CO) - vice-president of the class, serving on East Campus Council.  Through that work, she chaired several major campus events and volunteers constantly to help others with their events.  She was also selected to be an RA next year and works in a lab studying muscular dystrophy.  She also volunteers at Bridge II Sports (activities for individuals with physical disabilities) and Globe Med.

Priya Sarkar(Glen Allen, VA) - her nominators spoke about her energy and positivity. She tutors middle school students, works with Iraqi refugees and is an RA on East Campus.  She serves on Duke Student Government and is also a research assistant in a lab working on Alzheimer's disease.  She also was part of a group that developed "You don't know Durham" week.  

Amir Williams (Raleigh, NC) - secretary on East Campus Council, Baldwin Scholar, Black Student Alliance, tutor for America Reads and America Counts, developed a program called ProjectDive that pulls together small groups of first year students to have authentic, meaningful conversations.  She also was responsible for many aspects of Class of 2019 recruitment weekend.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2016)
Omar Khan (Lahore, Pakistan) is planning to double major in economics and global health.  This summer he is participating in the DukeEngage in Jordan program.  Omar was a member of the East Campus Council from WIlson and is also joining the Honor Council.  He has also been part of student organizations for Pakistani students and is known on campus for wearing a clown nose to help cheer people up and keep perspective.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Award (2017)
Maryam Asenuga (Rhode Island) is very involved on campus in both student life and volunteer work such as: Blackwell House Council, Tutor for refugee youth, Duke Chorale singer, Habitat for Humanity, Student Arabic Union, Black Student Alliance, and Duke's Student Advisory Board for Human Rights.  She's also a writer and plans to major in Public Policy, hoping to become a civil rights attorney.

Julie Anne Levey Leadership Academy

The Julie Anne Levey Leadership Academy for First Year Students is a series of workshops designed to aid emerging leaders in developing skills to be successful at Duke University and beyond. The mission of the program is to give emerging leaders the training and opportunity to broaden their skills and learn to apply them to the larger Duke and global community.

The Julie Anne Levey Leadership Academy consists of workshops designed for any first year students with an interest in leadership. These sessions are for any student leader including house council members, athletes, members of Greek Organizations, and members of other groups and clubs.

Dates and locations are announced through fliers around East Campus and at House Council meetings. Topics include:

  • Team Spirit: group motivation, morale, and recognition
  • Playing Fair:  Ethics & Leadership
  • President's Panel
  • The Social Change Model of Leadership
  • Leadership Theory: An Academic Look at Leadership
