High Holidays

High Holidays at Duke is a celebratory time to bring the campus community together and start a new year. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, services will be virtual.

The new year is almost here - and we have lots of ways for you to celebrate the High Holidays with our Duke Jewish community. Our calendar follows.

Friday, September 18

  • Shofar Blast at Bryan Center Plaza: 4:00 pm. On-campus students can stop by the Plaza to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the sounding of the shofar
  • Shofar Blast on the Freeman Center Patio: 4:30 pm. We'll continue bringing in the holiday on the patio at the Freeman Center with the sounding of the shofar
  • Erev Rosh Hashanah​ with JLD: 6:30 pm; dinner blessings at 7:30 pm. Join Rabbi Elana and Holiday Shaliach Tzibbur Mike Landes for services and dinner blessings. 

Saturday, September 19

  • Duke Rosh Hashanah Morning Rooms for Hillel's Higher Holidays: 10:00 am Join the JLD Team in our Duke-specific rooms as we participate in the Hillel Higher Holidays services (www.higherholidays.org - registration preferred, not required).

Sunday, September 20

  • Shofar Blast on the Freeman Center Patio: 2:00 pm. Visit the Freeman Center patio to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the shofar

  • Kol Nidre with JLD: 6:30 pm. Join Rabbi Elana and Holiday Shaliach Tzibbur Mike Landes for services to begin Yom Kippur.

Sukkot

This Sukkot, Jewish Life at Duke will provide a one-person Sukkah for students to be able to say the blessing for sitting in a Sukkah and enjoy a meal (individually-wrapped snacks and grape juice will be provided on Yom Tov). We will also have a lulav and etrog set on hand for shaking.

The Sukkah will be open for individual use during the following times on the Freeman Center patio:

  • Friday, October 2: 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Saturday, October 3: 3:00-5:00 pm
  • Sunday, October 4: 3:00-5:00 pm
  • Monday, October 5: 3:00-5:00 pm
  • Tuesday, October 6: 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Wednesday, October 7: 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Thursday, October 8: 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Friday, October 9: 3:00-5:00 pm

Sukkot programming is made possible through the generosity of the Freeman Family Program Fund. All meals or programs are free and open to all, first come first serve!
