Learn More About Project BUILD

Welcome to Project BUILD!

I am excited to congratulate you on the BEST decision you will make regarding your Duke experience. For me, every rewarding experience at Duke has been rooted in community and BUILD has been a foundational community since the first day I arrived at Duke. Needless to say, I have many happy memories of times spent with BUILDers. Through my time at Duke, I have developed communities of friends, classmates, and through organizations but there is no community quite as special as BUILD. BUILD helps students get an invaluable look ahead at what it’s like to live as a part of the Duke and Durham communities.

BUILD stands for Building Undergraduate Involvement in the Life of Durham. Each year we construct our own community of upperclassmen crew leaders and first-year crewlettes. First-years and returning participants grow close as they visit a vast array of service sites in Durham throughout the 8-day program. The diverse group of crew leaders are involved in the full spectrum of academic and co-curricular activities and serve as mentors for first-years as they transition into their lives as Duke students and Durham residents.

Alongside our service, fun activities like costume roller skating, karaoke, bowling, and Durham Bulls games bring the BUILD community together. Additionally, each night ends with late night crew bonding. You will have the opportunity to share what makes you uniquely you with individuals who will support you throughout your time at Duke and truly become family. Indeed, many first-years tend to get little sleep during the program because they spend most nights chatting with other BUILDers and learning more about all aspects of Duke life. BUILDers of all ages agree that they met many of their best friends when they were first-year students in the program.

We have been planning BUILD 2017 since the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year and we cannot wait for you to join us for the greatest week of the year. I strongly encourage you to reach out to previous BUILDers (including me!) to hear about their BUILD experience. Sincerely,
