Learn More About Project BUILD
Hello and welcome to Project BUILD!
I am excited to congratulate you on the BEST decision you will make regarding your Duke experience. From the moment I stepped on campus, BUILD has offered me an extremely fun, supportive, trustworthy, and lasting community that is incomparable to any other. In fact, I can easily say that BUILD has been the single most formative experience I’ve had at Duke so far! I was not only able to engage in rewarding service excursions, but also had the opportunity to befriend and bond with other first-years and upperclassmen before the school year even began. Project BUILD is unique in that it gives students an invaluable look ahead at what it’s like to live as a part of both the Duke and Durham communities.
BUILD stands for Building Undergraduate Involvement in the Life of Durham. Each year we construct our own community of upperclassmen crew leaders and first-year crewlettes. First-years and returning participants grow close as they visit a vast array of service sites in Durham throughout the 8-day program. The diverse group of crew leaders are involved in the full spectrum of academic and co-curricular activities and serve as mentors for first-years as they transition into their lives as Duke students and Durham residents.
Alongside our service, fun activities like costume roller skating, karaoke, bowling, and Durham Bulls games bring the BUILD community even closer together. Additionally, each day ends with late-night crew bonding. You will have the opportunity to share what makes you uniquely you with individuals who will support you throughout your time at Duke and truly become family. Although many first-years tend to get little sleep during the program, BUILDers of all ages agree that they met many of their best friends, grew immensely, and learned about all aspects of Duke life during such late-night chats with BUILDers as first-years themselves.
We have been planning BUILD 2020 since the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year and cannot wait for you all to join us for undoubtedly the greatest week of the year! I strongly encourage you to reach out to previous BUILDers (including me!) to hear about their BUILD experiences.
