Vaughn comes to Duke from the Ohio State University (OSU), where he served in both Student Health Services and the Department of Family Medicine since 2007. In addition to providing primary health care to undergraduate and graduate students, he designed innovative health promotion activities that integrated health services into the life of the university community; enhanced organizational effectiveness for the health center; and developed a Narrative Medicine curriculum across multiple areas of OSU.

Vaughn served his family practice residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He received his Doctor of Medicine from OSU in 1997, where he also did received his BA in English Literature in 1993. He is currently the chair elect of the clinical medicine section of the American College Health Association, chair of the social networking subcommittee of the Council of Scientific Editors, executive editor of the Journal of American College Health, among other roles in the medical community. His professional memberships include the Council of Scientific Editors, the American College Health Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Halstater joined Duke Student Health in August of 2014. He has been at Duke since 2004 when he joined the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program as the Residency Program Director.  He served in this role for almost ten years before joining Student Health.  He has a passion for providing primary care services to students which stems from his undergraduate days of serving as a Sexual Health Advocate at Rutgers University.

Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Halstater completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers College with degrees in Biology and Biochemistry and went on to earn his MD at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  He completed his Family Medicine Residency at the UCLA Family Medicine Residency Program, and did a one year fellowship as Chief Resident for the UCLA Family Medicine Residency Program. Upon completion of his fellowship, he joined the faculty of the UCLA program to teach residents and provide medical care to the uninsured patients of Los Angeles, where he later became Assistant Program Director, then Co-Director of the UCLA Family Medicine Residency until joining Duke.  His professional memberships include the American Academy of Family Physicians, the North Carolina Association of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American College Health Association.

He is fluent in Spanish, and enjoys road and mountain biking, reading, outdoor activities and spending time with his wife and two boys.

Danielle Sawrey-Kubicek, PA-C, attended Duke University Medical School where she received her Master of Health Science and Physician Assistant Certification.  She worked in Family Practice prior to joining Student Health in 2016.  She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.  Her clinical interests include adolescent health, women's health, sports medicine, and preventive care.  In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, running, swimming, and spending time with her family.  She also likes to travel and is fluent in French.

Dr. Spotts joined Duke Student Health in July 2015. Originally from South Carolina, Dr. Spotts majored in chemistry at Furman University and earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Maryland and for many years worked for Patient First Maryland Medical Group where he served as a staff physician, Assistant Medical Director, and Medical Director for the Perry Hall, MD location. While in Maryland he found that his favorite groups of patients were the high school and college students who came to his office for illnesses and injuries. In his free time Dr. Spotts enjoys running, reading, watching college football, and spending time with his wife and two boys.

Dr Trost attended Medical School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She completed her residency in Family Medicine here at Duke University.  Melanie loves working in Student Health because it allows her to focus on her medical interests – women’s health, family planning, sports medicine, dermatology, travel medicine, and eating and body image concerns.  She enjoys being a primary care provider for students because of the unique opportunities to help newly independent health care consumers navigate a complex health care system.  At Student Health she oversees the International Travel Clinic and is the medical provider for the Eating and Body Image Concerns (EBIC) team.  In her free time, Melanie enjoys biking, kayaking, reading, gardening and playing with her family.

Cleo Estrera is a Nurse Practitioner and Women's Health Coordinator at the Duke Student Wellness Center. She earned her Master's of Science in Nursing from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2006, is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and completed certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in 2009. Prior to settling in Durham, Cleo lived, worked, and learned in Richmond, VA; Gambier, OH (Kenyon College); Bristol, England; and Boston, MA. Her clinical interests include teen / adolescent health, women's health, preventive care and health promotion. In her leisure time, she likes to stroller-jog, kickbox, and explore the Triangle area with her husband, Matthew, and their boisterous toddler, George.

Karen Haith is an Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. She earned her Masters in Nursing at the University of Greensboro.  Board Certified in Adult Health by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Karen received her BSN from A&T State University and her ASN from Alamance Community College.  Karen joined Student Health in 2005 and has been with Duke University since 2003.  She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Nursing Society. Karen's clinical interests and experience include family medicine, women's health, preventative medicine and health maintenance. Karen's outside interests include gardening, spending quality time with her family, shopping, playing with her two dogs and bird watching.

Franca is the Director of Nutrition Services at Student Health, an Associate Professor with the Department of Community and Family Medicine, and adjunct faculty in the Department of Recreation and Physical Activity. She is one of two Student Health dietitians, and has worked at Duke for over 25 years. She has an Associate Degree in medical technology, a BS in Community Nutrition from the University of Maryland and an MPH in nutrition from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She became Board Certified as a specialist in Sports Science Dietetics in 2011 and earned her Eating Disorder Specialist certification in 2013. Franca is a registered and licensed dietitian and gourmet cook who has worked with professional and amateur sports teams and individuals. She spends much of her time at Duke working with athletes as well as students struggling with disordered eating behaviors. Franca is very actively involved with the media in promoting messages about good health and nutrition through television, magazines and newspapers. In the fall semesters she teaches PE 203 – Diet and Nutrition.

Toni graduated from Rutgers University, Cook College with a degree in Human Nutrition and Foods. She went on to complete an extensive internship at The New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center. Originally from New York Toni moved to North Carolina in 1993. Her work in New York was focused on weight management, cardiac rehab and all areas of clinical nutrition and wellness. During this time she also consulted with individual members of professional sports teams. Upon moving to North Carolina her career took a slightly different direction and she began to work within the mental health system focusing on the nutritional needs of those with mental illness.

In recent years Toni has obtained an advanced training certificate in the area of adult weight management and is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. Toni came to work at Duke in October of 2002. She enjoys working in the areas of disordered eating and weight management, mindfulness/wellness and all areas of clinical nutrition practice.
