One in three American Indian Women have been raped or have experienced an attempted rape. – U.S. Justice Department

Amplifying women’s voices is one of the foci at the Duke Women’s Center, which is done through letting the survivor tell her own story. During the 2017 Alternative Spring Break Trip to Navajo Nation in Arizona, students experienced this form of storytelling first hand. The trip focused on gender violence within the Navajo Nation territory where students connected with the Tohdenasshai Women’s Shelter and learned from various players within the system--from legal to community based leaders-- about the historical roots and current day symptoms of gender based violence.
