Koru Mindfulness workshops

A koru, the spiral shape of the unfurling fern frond, is the natural representation of the balance between perpetual growth and stability.  This symbol was chosen to represent the Mindfulness Meditation workshops CAPS offered a number years ago, and this has grown to a number of different workshops and retreats that offers skills in Mindfulness and Meditation, which offer the type of growth symbolized by the koru.

As our work in this area grows, with workshops offered by other departments here at Duke University and campuses across the country, Koru will also promote mindsets and life practices consistent with the concepts and skills taught in the various Koru classes.

Health Coaching is a service offered by DuWell to all students - undergraduates and graduates. Both group and individual sessions are available. The purpose of Health Coaching is to assist students to understand how the different dimensions of wellness relate to each other. If one area of wellness is out of balance it can impact numerous other areas. Coaching is a partnership with the student so the student can identify areas to be brought back into balance and set an action plan to do so.

DuWell staff are available to facilitate discussions and present workshops on a variety of wellness topics, and can adapt any workshop to meet the needs of your group.  Commonly requested topics for programs are stress management, alcohol abuse prevention, sexual health and relationships, etc.

If you are requesting a workshop:
In order to host a successful workshop, be sure to decide on a topic that's of interest to everyone and identify a date that's at least two weeks out - to allow yourself time to coordinate and promote the program and for your presenters to prepare the presentation.  Also, be sure to get the word out!  We need a minimum of ten people to get the conversation going and to ensure all workshops are interactive.

Many student organizations or teams also meet with us to define practices, policies and procedures to keep their members safe and healthy. Small group discussions can help your group:
• Learn more about wellness resources available on campus
• Discuss how your group's culture affects everyone within the group
• Discuss ways that your group can be involved with community health issues
• Address the disruptive behaviors of specific group members
• Get advice on how to help a friend dealing with a substance use problem or other health issue

Before contacting DuWell, Identify who will be a part of the discussion and the desired purpose/ focus of the discussion.

Drug Education & Harm Reduction

Party Monitor Trainings are a chance for students to talk with other student leaders and learn skills regarding:

  • The goals of hosting events
  • The roles of the Party Monitor
  • The risks associated with alcohol and other drug use
  • How to promote safe social behaviors
  • Resources and support for your group
  • Develop skills to address potentially dangerous and questionable behavior among your guests, including overconsumption of alcohol and drugs and situations potentially involving sexual assault

For ALL events involving alcohol, there must be one Party Monitor for every 25 expected attendees. Party Monitors must have completed one training each academic year.  When planning an event, names of Party Monitors must be submitted with the Space Request. Program Notification Form, and through Dukegroups.com.

Register and Attend a Training
We ask that students who wish to become certified Party Monitors sign up 2-3 weeks (when possible) in advance of their planned event, as trainings fill up quickly and you are not guaranteed a spot in a class if your event is too close to your event. Members of the same organization DO NOT have to sign up for the same session. Remember to bring your Duke ID and smartphone or laptop!

You only need to complete one training each academic year. Registration is required. Registration will close once capacity is reached.

If you are unable to attend a session you have registered for, please email DuWell or call 919-681-8421 so we may open up your spot for another student interested in completing the training.

2017 - 2018 Introductory Party Monitor Dates Location: Student Wellness Center

  • Wednesday, February 21st, 5:30 - 7:00pm 

Advanced Party Monitor Dates ***Introductory Party Monitor is a prerequisite*** 

Any students who have completed Introductory Party Monitor Training within the past two academic years have the option to take a quiz as an alternative to attending the full, in-person training. All quizzes are by appointment only, take place in the DuWell office, and last approximately 30 minutes. For additional information, please contact David Mallen.

DuWell offers students the opportunity to meet individually with a staff member to explore options for reducing or quitting their tobacco use. Consultations are free and may be one-time or ongoing depending on the individual's need for support. We can also connect you with other resources both on and off campus.

Is your student group planning a social event for students on campus? We provide training and advising for Duke student groups that are planning/hosting campus events. 

How We Can Help

  • DuWell provides advising and consultations for Duke student groups that are planning to host on-campus events. We are happy to work with your group on an ongoing basis to develop and implement a risk management plan.
  • Also, the Party Monitor program is in place to assist student groups to see all of the risks inherent in hosting a social event and reduce the risks.

Planning a Large Scale Event?

  • We can provide consultations to assist in the planning process for major campus events like LDOC, Joe College Day, Game Day or smaller events organized by student groups.
  • Organizers of these types of large scale entertainment venues have greater numbers of concerns to evaluate to minimize the negative consequences of alcohol and substance use that may be associated with these events.

True Blue is a program presented during Duke's Welcome Week. The

program provides information about alcohol and substance use, sexual assault, sexual health, stress management, sleep, nutrition and healthy choices that allow students to make the best of their experience at Duke.

As a member of the Class of 2021, you are required to complete both AlcoholEdu & Haven for College, two online science-based courses used on over 500 campuses nationwide, before you arrive at Duke. AlcoholEdu provides detailed information about alcohol and its effects on the body and mind. Whether you drink or not, the goals of the course are to help you make well-informed decisions about alcohol and address the drinking behavior of your peers. Haven will provide information to help you identify, react, respond to, and assist with preventing sexual assault and relationship violence. Haven will also help you learn about healthy relationships, the importance of consent and being a good communicator, and the many ways you can help create a safe and positive campus environment.

Members of the incoming class will complete the majority of each course before arriving on campus for orientation. Approximately 45 days after passing the first part, students are required to complete the brief final chapter and follow-up survey.


Please note all survey responses are strictly confidential.

The school will only receive information about the student body as a whole and will never see individual answers. You can feel confident that providing truthful answers--no matter what they are--will not put you at any risk for repercussions.

We also encourage you to bookmark the DUWELL website (https://studentaffairs.duke.edu/duwell) as a source of alcohol use and wellness information throughout your first year at Duke.


For AlcoholEDU, two sections need to be completed to fulfill the requirement.

Part One of the course takes approximately 1 hour to complete. This section includes:

  • Pre-test
  • Chapters 1 through 3
  • Post-test
  • Survey 2 (Students must earn a grade of 85 or higher to pass Part One)

Part Two occurs 45 days after you complete the Post-test and Survey 2. You will receive an email asking you to complete Chapter 4 and the Final exam.


For Haven, two sections need to be completed to fulfill the requirement.

Part One of the course takes approximately 1 hour to complete. This section includes:

  • Pre-test
  • Modules 1 through 6
  • Post-test

Part Two occurs 45 days after you complete the Post-test. You will receive an email asking you to complete the modules.


Due dates for students to complete AlcoholEDU & Haven® for the Class of 2021:

  • **Deadline to complete PART One – August 14, 2017
  • **Deadline to complete PART Two – October 27, 2017
  • It is required that each incoming first year student at Duke University complete AlcoholEdu & Haven® by October 27, 2017.
  • AlcoholEdu & Haven® is considered complete after the FINAL EXAM is finished. You must earn a score of 85 or higher to pass.

  • You will be asked to provide your Duke username and password in order to register for both modules.
  • Once you have registered, you may complete Part One of both the AlcoholEdu and Haven modules.
  • Please note that each module will take approximately one hour to complete so plan your time accordingly.

Other Important Information:

  • You will need Internet access and audio capabilities.
  • To avoid technical issues, please use any major web browser (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome) released within the previous two years. If you encounter difficulties while logging on or completing a module, try switching to an alternate browser to complete the modules.
  • You may take the course in multiple sittings.
  • The course may include surveys to help personalize your experience and measure participants’ attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are confidential; the school will only receive information about the participant group as a whole and will never see individual answers.


Need Technical Support?

Should you experience any difficulties or require support, the AlcoholEdu® and Haven Online Technical Support Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Simply click on the "Help" button located in the upper right-hand corner of every AlcoholEdu® and

Haven screen. You do not need to be logged into the course to access the Help Site. You may also call the AlcoholEdu® Help Desk at 1-866-384-9062 and a support representative will be happy to assist you.

BASICS is a screening program for alcohol and other drug use/abuse. This program assists students to identify their patterns of use and the risk factors associated with those patterns. Students work with a staff member on ideas of how to reduce their risk and implement their harm reduction strategy. Most students who attend BASICs are then able to manage their plan on their own, but Duke Student Wellness Center provides ongoing support as needed.

Students work with a staff member on ideas of how to reduce their risk and implement their harm reduction strategy. Process for registering for Group BASICS:

  1. Go to https://dukegroups.com/organization/WellnessCenter/forms and sign in using your student NetID and password.
  2. In the upper right corner, click on the magnifying glass icon and search for “Duke Student Wellness Center”.
  3. Once you have found the Duke Student Wellness Center, click “Forms”.
  4. Select the “Group BASICS Registration Form”. 
    a.    Enter all requested information into the fields.
    b.    There will be multiple options for when students may attend; students must rank 1-2-3 for their desired sessions with 1 representing their most desired dates/times. 
    c.    Once all information is entered, submit the form.
  5. Students are not automatically enrolled in their particular group until they receive an email confirmation from the Student Wellness Center with the link to the BASICS survey they must take prior to their indicated deadline. 

Note: If you cannot attend these sessions due to class, work, or other university business, please contact Ms. Michelle Johnson in the Student Wellness Center (919-684-1154) as soon as possible to arrange an individual appointment.

Prior to your first Group BASICS session:

  1. Double-check to make sure your assigned Group BASICS session matches your preferred date/time. Due to maximum capacity limits, it may be possible that your first preference could not be met so you were assigned to your second or third preference. Make sure you have both sessions marked on your calendar.
  2. Take the BASICS survey that was included in your confirmation link from Student Wellness. The survey should take no longer than 30mins to complete. 
    a.    Important: It is required that you complete this survey prior to the deadline stated in your confirmation email. Surveys will be printed out prior to the session and organized into your personal packet. If this survey is not available for us to print, you will not be able to adequately participate in  the session and you will be required to attend a different Group BASICS session at another time. No exceptions will be made.
    b.    If you encounter technical difficulties with your link or survey, you must contact Student Wellness ahead of time. 
  3. Arrive for your Group BASICS session at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to participate in your assigned session and you will need to reschedule to attend another day. 
  4. Plan to stay during the entire duration of the scheduled session. Early departures will not be allowed and if a student must leave early for any unexpected reason, they may be asked to repeat the session another day.

Following your Group BASICS session:

  1. Keep your Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) sheet. It will contain personal information that is unique to you and your plan for lowering your risk.
  2. Some students will be required to complete a second session depending on the individual’s circumstances. Instructions for scheduling the second session will be shared at the time of the first session.
  3. At the conclusion of your final BASICS session, your referral source (HDRL, OSC, Student Health, or other if applicable) will be contacted and informed that you completed your program. Student Wellness will not communicate any specific details about your information or conversation to your referral source without your permission, but we will confirm dates of attendance and participation of requested components such as completing the survey and participating in the group conversations. 
  4. Complete the 1-Month Follow-Up survey that will be sent by Student Wellness.
